CV for Dubai and UAE Jobs in 2026: Format, Photo, Visa Status and an Arabic CV
A CV for Dubai or UAE jobs uses the same clean, result-led format that works anywhere, plus a short personal-details block that Western CVs usually leave out: where you are now, your visa status, your notice period and often your nationality. A photo is common but optional. UAE law requires none of these details on a CV. They are regional conventions, so include the ones that help your application and leave out the rest.
Competition is heavy. Mahesh Shahdadpuri, group chairman of TASC Outsourcing, told Khaleej Times in August 2026 that "it is now common for a single vacancy to attract several hundred applications within a matter of days." He added that candidates who send "the same CV to hundreds of vacancies often struggle." This guide is general information, not legal advice.
1. The UAE CV format at a glance
- Header. Give your name, phone number with country code, email, LinkedIn URL and current location, for example "Dubai, UAE" or "London, UK, relocating to Dubai".
- Availability line. Put your visa status and notice period on one line under the header (examples in section 3).
- Professional summary. Write three or four lines covering your role, experience, sector and one headline result. Rewrite it for each application.
- Experience. List jobs in reverse chronological order, with three to five result-led bullets for each recent role. Give the city and country for each job.
- Skills and languages. List each language with your level, for example "Arabic: native; English: fluent".
- Education and certifications. Give the degree, institution and year, plus certifications your sector recognises.
Keep it to one or two pages, as Gulf News's April 2026 CV guide recommends, and send a PDF unless the ad asks for Word. The same piece quotes Dr Rommel Sergio of Canadian University Dubai: "Tailoring a CV for different roles is not merely advisable but essential."
2. Photo: include it or not?
- For: LoopCV's July 2026 guide to Gulf CVs calls a professional headshot "customary and expected" in the region. It contrasts this with the US and UK, where photos are rarely or never used because of anti-discrimination concerns.
- Against: no UAE rule requires a photo on a CV. You will need a passport-style photograph for the visa later, but that is separate paperwork. Large employers screen CVs with applicant tracking systems (ATS), where a photo adds nothing. A photo also invites snap judgements about age, gender or ethnicity.
Our practical rule:
- Include a photo when the ad asks for one, when a recruiter says the client expects it, or for customer-facing roles such as hospitality and retail.
- Leave it out for multinational careers portals, when the ad says not to include one, or when you'd rather be judged on your experience alone.
- If you include one, use a recent headshot with a plain background and business clothing. Keep it small and in the header as a separate image. LoopCV makes the same point: a simple image element that ATS parsers can skip.
3. Nationality, visa status and other personal details
UAE recruiters ask about personal details because they affect how much hiring you will cost, how fast you can start and whether you can legally work. Under the UAE Labour Law, nobody may work in the UAE without a work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). The u.ae government portal explains that the employer attaches your signed job offer to the permit application.
| Detail | Why employers ask | Trade-off | Our default |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visa status | Cost and time to hire | Saves both sides time | Include |
| Notice period | Start date | None | Include |
| Nationality | Visa processing, Emiratisation | Can be used to filter you | Include if Emirati or asked; otherwise optional |
| Date of birth | Convention | Invites age bias | Leave out unless asked |
| Marital status | Convention | Invites bias | Leave out unless asked |
| Religion | Rarely relevant | Invites bias | Leave out |
| Passport or Emirates ID number | Not needed yet | Fraud risk | Never include |
The legal position, briefly. According to the UAE government portal, Article 4 of the federal labour law (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021) prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, colour, sex, religion, national or social origin or disability. The same article states that rules aimed at increasing UAE citizens' participation in the labour market are not discrimination, which is the legal basis for Emiratisation. Age and marital status are not on the federal list. The DIFC financial free zone has its own employment law, which protects more characteristics, including nationality, marital status and age, according to a summary by law firm Addleshaw Goddard. The UK's National Careers Service tells applicants to leave age, marital status and nationality off a CV. In the UAE, including them is your choice, not an obligation.
Visa-status lines that work:
- "Visa: UAE employment visa · Notice: 30 days"
- "Visa: Family residence visa · Available immediately"
- "Visa: Visit visa, valid until 15 January 2027 · Available immediately"
- "Location: Manchester, UK · Relocating to Dubai · Notice: one month"
What never goes on a CV: your passport number, Emirates ID number or document scans. Employers do need a passport copy, but only at offer stage. Gulf News reports that MOHRE's document list for an official offer includes a passport copy valid for more than six months. MOHRE has also warned about fake recruiters who ask for payments. Genuine offers use MOHRE's template with a barcode, and you can check them through MOHRE's call centre (600590000), website or app. The labour law also bars employers from charging you recruitment fees, directly or indirectly. See our fake recruiter red flags guide.
Attested degrees. A 2021 Gulf News explainer says jobs that MOHRE classes at skill levels 1 to 3 need attested academic certificates for the work permit. Check MOHRE's current rules, because requirements change. If your degree is already attested, adding "(attested for UAE)" tells recruiters the paperwork won't delay your start.
4. Should you send an Arabic CV?
For most private-sector roles, an English CV is enough. A Reddit user who analysed 21,706 UAE listings on the Tanqeeb job aggregator in October 2026 found that every job title was in English, and that 2.8 per cent of listings were explicitly aimed at Emiratis. That covers one aggregator, not the whole market.
Arabic is still part of formal employment paperwork. According to u.ae, the official job offer must be in Arabic and English, plus a third language the worker understands. Sources disagree on whether to send an Arabic CV when nobody has asked. We suggest matching the language of the ad, or sending English and mentioning that an Arabic version is available.
An Arabic version is worth sending when:
- the job ad is written in Arabic or asks for Arabic;
- the role needs Arabic, as in government-facing work, legal, PR, media or Arabic customer service;
- the employer works mainly in Arabic, in the UAE or elsewhere in the GCC;
- a recruiter asks for one.
How to do it well:
- Make it a separate file, not a two-column bilingual layout. Mixed text directions are harder to read and harder for software to parse.
- Translate meaning, not words. Use the job title an Arabic-speaking recruiter would actually search for.
- Keep proper nouns as they are known. Company names and tools such as Excel or SAP often read better in Latin script.
- Keep every number identical in both versions, and use one digit style consistently.
- Ask a native speaker to review it.
Voxxhire's CV generator can produce your CV as a right-to-left Arabic PDF alongside the English ATS and recruiter versions, and it checks that the figures and names match your source CV. Treat it as a strong first draft, and ask a fluent Arabic speaker to read it before you send it.
5. Make it pass the ATS
LoopCV notes that major Gulf employers, giga-projects and recruitment agencies use the same applicant tracking systems as Western firms. The usual rules apply: use a single column and standard headings, keep key details out of tables and text boxes, and use the ad's wording for your skills. To test your PDF, copy all of its text into a plain document. If the text comes out scrambled, the ATS probably sees it scrambled too. See how to get past ATS filters.

7. If you are an Emirati candidate
On 30 October 2026, Gulf News reported that private companies with 50 or more employees have until 31 December to raise Emiratisation in skilled roles by a further 1 per cent, completing a 2 per cent increase for the year. The ministry is also pushing employers to find Emirati candidates on the Nafis platform. Put "UAE National" clearly in your header, keep your Nafis profile consistent with your CV, and give specific results from internships, training programmes and leadership roles. The ministry has also urged Emiratis to "reject fictitious jobs".

UAE CV checklist
- One to two pages, single column, sent as a PDF
- Location, visa status and notice period near the top
- A photo only when the role or recruiter expects one
- No date of birth, marital status or religion unless asked
- No passport or Emirates ID numbers
- An Arabic version only when it is called for, checked by a native speaker
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a photo on my CV for Dubai jobs? No law requires one. Photos are a regional convention and many Gulf CV guides treat them as expected, but they are optional. Include one if the ad or recruiter asks or the role is customer-facing, and leave it out for multinational careers portals.
Should I put my nationality on a UAE CV? It's common because nationality affects visa processing and Emiratisation, but it isn't required. Emirati candidates should include it. For everyone else it's a personal choice, and the recruiter will ask if it matters.
How do I write my visa status on a CV? Add one line under your contact details with your visa type, its validity where relevant, and your notice period. For example: "Visa: Family residence visa · Available immediately".
Do I need an Arabic CV to work in the UAE? Not for most private-sector roles, which advertise and recruit in English. Send an Arabic version when the ad is in Arabic, the role needs Arabic, or a recruiter asks for one.
Is it safe to send my passport copy with my CV? Not at the CV stage. A passport copy is needed for an official offer and work permit, so share it only once you have a verified offer. Never pay a recruiter or employer for a job or a visa.
